Warhawks win home opener vs Freedom 4-3
The Madison Varsity ice hockey team won their home opener at Reston Skatequest Friday 11/16 defeating the Freedom Eagles 4-3. The Eagles scored first, midway through the first period, however the Warhawks came right back a minute later with an unassisted goal from center Keegan Sweeney. Madison would continue to score in the first period with a goal from defenseman Sammy Thompson, assisted by forwards Miller Williams and Jeff Hunter at the 7:31 mark and Matt Hetherington, assisted by defenseman Will Albrittain at the 4:56 mark. Freedom scored another goal late in the first to keep themselves in the game. The teams would battle throughout a scoreless 2nd period, but center Keegan Sweeney would tally his second goal of the night, assisted by Tom Hetherington early in the 3rd period. Madison maintained its lead even with a sustained effort late in the period with a goal scored by the Eagles at the 3 minute mark. The Eagles would pull their goalie and continue to pressure the Warhawks but Madison would hold on for the win. Goalie Ben D’Haiti stopped 30 of 33 shots.
