The Madison Warhawk ice hockey team demonstrated its scoring depth tonight with 8 of 10 players registering a point in a 7-2 win over Woodbridge. The Warhawks jumped out to a quick lead just 18 seconds into the opening frame when Dylan Cass (Sr.) scored his first of three goals on a sharp angled shot that found its way past the Woodbridge goalie. Dylan netted his second goal off a pass from Matt Bacigalupo (Sr.) and Justin Shayne (Fr.) to close out the first period with Madison leading 4-1.
Jason Calem (Fr.) was the lone Warhawk to put the biscuit in the basket in the second period when he scored off a nice feed from Mike Gros (Soph.). Dylan completed his hattrick halfway through the third period roofing a wrist shot into the upper corned of the net.
The story of the night came from a pair of players who scored their first Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League (NVSHL) goals. Justin Roberts (Jr.) and Johna Ezzard (Fr.) both play defense and both are in their rookie season with the Warhawks. But the similarity of their goals ends there. Justin, demonstrated his brute force when after receiving a pass from Alex Tudan (Soph.), he unleashed a cannon blast from the point that left the Woodbridge goalie no time to react. Johna, on the other hand, was poetry in motion when she scored on an end-to-end rush that saw her dance through several Viking defenders, split the final two defensemen and then deposited the puck where momma hides the cookies…top shelf!
Next up for the Warhawks will be arch rival Oakton on Friday, 13 FEB at 6:10 PM at the Reston Skatequest Rink. This will also be our “Senior Recognition” game.
